Summary, etc. El objetivo principal de estas conferencias es presentar a un principiante las representaciones de dimensiones finitas de los grupos de Lie y las álgebras de Lie. Dado que este objetivo es compartido por muchos otros libros, deberamos explicar en este Prefacio cómo difiere nuestro enfoque, aunque el lector potencial probablemente pueda verlo mejor al navegar rápidamente por el libro. La teoría de la representación es simple de definir: es el estudio de las formas en que un grupo dado puede actuar en espacios vectoriales. Sin embargo, es casi seguro que es único entre temas tan claramente delineados, en la amplitud de su interés para los matemáticos. Esto no es sorprendente: las acciones grupales son ubicuas en las matemáticas del siglo XX, y donde el objeto sobre el que acta un grupo no es un espacio vectorial, hemos aprendido a reemplazarlo por uno que sea tangente, etc.
