Summary, etc. "El tema de la salud, las enfermedades y las consecuentes epidemias como objeto de estudio histórico no son preocupaciones recientes ni exclusivas de Colombia, y por el contrario, tienen una larga tradición, que viene desde el siglo XVIII. La mayoría de los discursos científicos, religiosos e históricos de la primera mitad de dicho siglo describían las epidemias desde una visión estética, que las presentaba como procesos derivados de la naturaleza o la divinidad, que se repetían en determinadas en forma cíclica, como consecuencia de determinadas coyunturas. A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII se presentaron transformaciones significativas dentro del tratamiento histórico de este tema. Las primeras que se pueden destacar se desprenden de los aportes de los médicos que defendieron las concepciones higienistas, cuya tendencia principal fue presentar las enfermedades como el producto de circunstancias sociales, lo cual rompía con las viejas visiones sobre el origen divino y natural de las epidemias."
