Summary, etc. Leviatán es una de las obras maestras de la filosofía política. La primera edición inglesa, aparecida en 1651, dio renombre universal a su autor, quien predicó con sus teorías el utilitarismo en moral y el despotismo en política. El Leviatán -nombre tomado de la Biblia- designa a la República o el Estado; se trata de un monstruo que brota de la razón humana, bajo la presión de las circunstancias y necesidades la institución del Estado llega a decaer, por obra de las pasiones, en la guerra civil y en la desintegración, que es la muerte. Este libro Constituye una penetrante crítica de la iglesia y de su política. Para acabar con el reino de las tinieblas y de la supresión, el nuevo Estado inglés debería excluir con firmeza todos los defectos orgánicos del antiguo y ser netamente racionalista y laico, un verdadero reino de la luz y de la ciencia. Además de su alcance en la evolución científica, la importancia de hombres como Hobbes radica en que hablan un lenguaje universal, sin medida de tiempo ni de espacio.
