Summary, etc. "El virus linfotrópico de células T humanas (HTLV) fue el primer retrovirus humano descubierto en 1979, el HTLV-I y el HTLV-II han sido asociados con enfermedad en humanos y con el estado de seroportador, las patologías asociadas a estos virus incluyen síndromes inflamatorios, enfermedades linfoproliferativas e infecciones oportunistas. . Se estima que, aproximadamente, 20 millones de personas en el mundo están infectadas con el HTLV de tipos I y II, y que 90 % corresponde a portadores asintomáticos, con tasas de seroprevalencia que varan de un lugar a otro. Debido a la capacidad del HTLV de transmitirse por medio de la transfusión de sangre, es obligatorio realizar pruebas de anticuerpos contra el HTLV de tipos I y II a las unidades de sangre y componentes sanguíneos, con el fin de garantizar la calidad y seguridad de la sangre. "
