Cioma Schönhaus (Berlín, 1922) rememora sus asombrosas vivencias en el Berlín nacionalsocialista de 1942, cuando, con apenas veinte años, decide pasar a la clandestinidad para escapar de las garras del régimen. Con sus padres ya deportados y con su último penique, el de la suerte, entregado a la Gestapo, Cioma consigue, gracias a su talento innato para el dibujo, un curioso trabajo que le ayudará a salvar la vida de muchos compatriotas judíos, además de la suya propia: falsificar documentos. Lejos de rendirse y dejarse llevar por el miedo, el joven Cioma desafía a su destino y apuesta por la vida hasta rozar lo temerario: tiene una aventura con la esposa de un soldado alemán, frecuenta los locales de moda y los mejores restaurantes -los mismos que acostumbran a visitar sus perseguidores- y hasta adquiere un pequeño yate de vela. Pero la Gestapo empieza a cerrar el círculo sobre el escurridizo Cioma, y el osado dibujante se lanza a la que tal vez sea la última oportunidad para sobrevivir: huir a Suiza en bicicleta.
