En La habitación cerrada, el protagonista recibe el encargo de buscar a un amigo de la infancia desaparecido que ha dejado una maleta llena de manuscritos inéditos que deseaba que fueran públicados, por razones un tanto confusas.En las obras de Paul Auster, los acontecimientos se precipitan tras sucesos de una naturaleza, aparentemente, insignificante: lo pequeño marca la diferencia y el azar condiciona las decisiones. La investigación de lo otro se convierte en la búsqueda de uno mismo, en el afán de hallar una identidad propia y distintiva.
